Deepa Mehta first read Midnight's Children in 1982 when she was in Dehli. The book left an enormous impact on her and the book’s fearless dark humor combined with its affection for all human foibles stayed with her for years to come.

One night Deepa met Salman Rushdie for dinner and she asked him if she could make a film on the Booker Prize winning novel. Salman had the right to the book and instinctively he sold the rights to Deepa Mehta for just one dollar!

A month before the shooting started, Deepa Mehta organized intensive workshops for the actors. But the most important preparation was meticulously planning the world of the movie. The movie spans across four generations and five very distinct time periods.

The film reflects the same sentiment as the book. The last lines read, “The truth has been less glorious than the dream. But we have survived and made our way. And our lives have been, in spite of everything, acts of love”
Midnight’s Children in theatres on 1st Feb.
