We know the love stories of
Stephanie Meyer to be complicated. But never before like this as with ‘The Host’, where Meyer takes the entire
internal struggle between opposing forces within the same character to a whole new level
A futuristic world
finds itself invaded by the Souls, who are a very peaceful, harmonious,
homogenous group of extraterrestrial creatures that take over human bodies. But
the handfuls of humans, who have not been taken over by the Souls, are
understandably unhappy in this new utopic world, because all their loved ones
are gone. In such a world, Melanie finds herself taken away from the one she
loves, Jared Howe and her brother, captured by the Seeker and infused with the
Soul called Wanderer.
But Melanie is not
so easy to defeat. She fights back, and her body becomes dually occupied by
both her and Wanda, as the Soul character comes to be known.
In this complex
science fiction plot of famous love triangles, Meyer is generally known to whip
up, also take a complicated turn. Even as Melanie and Wanda get to understand
each other, Wanda begins to interact with other human beings and falls for one
of them, Ian O'Shea! Both women occupy the same body, but are in love with
different men. And one of the women is not even a human, but an
extraterrestrial creature.
“It’s a different
kind of story for Stephenie,” the actress observes. “It’s not a love triangle
exactly—it’s more a love square because there are four people involved, two in
the same body. They’re both in love with different people, which makes it
complicated.”
‘The Host’ releases in India on the 19th of April, 2013.
