Before the May 2011 killing of Osama bin Laden, Bigelow and the screenwriter Mark Boal were apparently developing a film on the U.S. military's failed 2001 pursuit of Al Queda leaders in Tora Bora. Their film was also going to portray the long and unsuccessful hunt for bin Laden. That was probably a more appropriate and historically safe time and place to open the film.
The two were about to begin filming when news broke that bin Laden had been killed. They immediately shelved the film they had been working on and redirected their focus. Kathryn Bigelow was ready to shoot Bin Laden herself, primed for a film on Osama’s escape from the battle of Tora Bora.
Though they fictionalized some details including the character Maya, Zero Dark Thirty effectively recreates the historic manhunt. Compiled from first-hand accounts and designed as docudrama, Zero Dark Thirty makes a big deal of its authenticity, but it’s essentially obedient to genre.
